Berklee Music Business Journal: Mechanicals Dues and RightsFlow

Posted in News | 12 November 2010 | 0 Comments

The digital age of music has introduced new legal forms of music consumption that do not correlate clearly with the previous licensing laws. These old laws were created at a time when the recorded music industry revolved around physical sales and traditional radio play. They do not address, however, services like Rhapsody, where streaming audio is not public performance, nor is it a transaction of ownership. In some cases, these gray areas have allowed royalties to slip through the cracks, never reaching the hands of the rightful copyright owner. Read the rest of this entry »

From Idol To The Indies, Cover Songs Sound Right

Thousands Clearing Songs Through RightsFlow’s Limelight Service

Cover songs have always been a popular way to transcend the familiar and connect with both current fans and new ones.  A well-picked, well-played cover can significantly drive fan enthusiasm and engagement and prove to be an important tool for many artists and bands.

In today’s market, the use of covers clearly transcends all strata of success levels and genres.  From mass-media programming like American Idol and Glee to big brands like Levi’s “Pioneer Sessions” to creative collaborations by John Legend & The Roots to inspired interpretations from the likes of Beck, The Flaming Lips, and Brian Wilson, cover songs are de rigueur for almost every band today. The right cover song is not only fun to perform and record, it ultimately can garner support from all fronts as fans sing-along and then pass-along a favorite cover.  And that’s the kind of sharing that will keep any artist searching for ways to clear cover songs.

Since it’s launch earlier this year, Limelight, powered by RightsFlow, has provided thousands of artists and labels around the globe with a simple way to clear covers for their physical, digital, ringtone, and streaming releases.   By reducing the complexity of licensing with domestic and international publishers directly, Limelight is providing a service for established and independent artists worldwide with users from over 46 countries: college bands, church choirs, indie labels, even an American Idol.

Lee DeWyze, last year’s Idol, and his team recently used Limelight to clear his version of Marilyn Manson’s “Beautiful People” for use with recordings being released on the WuLi Records imprint.  (His major label debut streets 11/16 on 19 Entertainment / RCA Records.)

”The most important thing for an artist is to have great songs to perform and to share.” said Wuli Records co-founder and producer Louis Svitek, who has done his share of covers with Ministry, M.O.D. and Mind Funk. “Cover songs can add a strong personal connection for fans as they reflect personal likes and influences, and allow an artist to add creative expression to something familiar.”

Added co-producer on the  ”Slumberland” and “So I’m Told” albums (now available through Fontana), Ryan McGuire, “Limelight provides a simple way for a musician to clear any cover song… making it simple to share and release classic or memorable song choices. It also ensures that songwriters and publisher get 100% of royalties due.”

From the independent label perspective, Limelight provides a cost-effective solution that ensures both legal compliance and proper accounting to the correct publishers and songwriters.

Jeremy Peters commented, “Having used multiple systems and processes of clearing songs as the Director of Licensing for Ghostly International, I have to say that Limelight is by far, the most easy, customer friendly, and straightforward process to license mechanical copyrights I’ve ever used. No matter what your level of comfortability with these rights are, Limelight has made the process a cinch – and with research services, quick and super helpful customer service – they blow the doors off of the processes their competitors have, in comparison. Regardless of whether this is your first license or your thousandth, I’d recommend them to anyone.”

Clearly in the current environment of media overload, the simplicity of a great cover song can cut through the clutter and help drive awareness and success for an artist or label.  With Limelight, you can cover any song your way today.  For more information, please visit www.songclearance.com.
