New York, NY August 2, 2010 – Limelight, an online mechanical licensing and reporting platform powered by RightsFlow, announced today that it is seeing worldwide adoption in under nine months with users in all 50 states and in more than 46 countries. Through its proprietary automated licensing system, the service helps bands, choirs and other musical groups obtain the necessary mechanical license for any song, from any publisher (including international publishers), reaching 100% of the publishing market.
Fire & Skill Recordings’ and Walkabouts musician Michael Wells noted, “The Walkabouts have been recording songs of our favorite songwriters for over twenty years and now we’re releasing these recordings digitally. Until we discovered Limelight we found it nearly impossible to acquire mechanical licenses. The site is easy to use with great customer service at a price that fits our business model and expected sales.”
On MusiciansWages.com, a website for working musicians, guitarist Cameron Mizell praised Limelight as one of “5 Online Tools Helping Musicians Make Money” and reported that the service is “designed to help independent musicians and labels.”
Michael Kauffman, SVP of Sales and Marketing at RightsFlow, added, “We’re extremely excited about the growing global use of Limelight to clear cover songs for distribution and sales in the U.S. Our goal continues to be to provide a simple licensing platform for artists that also ensures that songwriters and publishers are paid 100% of royalties due.”
The Limelight portal allows users to obtain licenses for physical releases, digital downloads, and ringtones, reducing the complexity of licensing with publishers directly. It offers several key features, including copyright compliance, licenses that don’t expire, minimal fees, and coverage of the full spectrum of the publishing market including publishers not represented by mechanical rights societies.
Under U.S. Copyright Law, mechanical licenses are required for music to be reproduced and distributed. The current U.S. statutory mechanical rate for physical product and for permanent downloads is 9.1¢ for songs five minutes or less and 1.75¢ per minute for songs over five minutes and a rate for ringtones of 24¢.
