LA Times: Take your royalty checks, SoundExchange begs (Featuring RightsFlow CEO Patrick Sullivan)

When John Boydston got an e-mail from SoundExchange saying he had several thousand dollars in unclaimed royalties, he did what most sensible people would do. He ignored it.

To the rock musician from Atlanta, “money for nothing” meant a song by Dire Straits, not a stranger contacting him out of the blue promising to cut him big checks.

Second NARM Salon Packs New York Venue – Patrick Sullivan, RightsFlow CEO, Moderates Panel

NARM held its second Salon Series event before a packed room at the Soho House NY on February 22. A panel of experts that represented BMI, CBS Interactive, HFA, RightsFlow, Roadrunner Records, The Songwriters Guild of America, and SoundExchange discussed the topic of streamlining digital licensing. Standardization of digital licensing was a key point during the discussion and NARM will be planning future events to advance this topic forward.

“HOW WILL I GET PAID?” Music Industry Execs Discuss Payment Models, Pirates, and Monetization at the CMJ Music Marathon

Four days of CMJ-sponsored panel discussions at NYU’s Kimmel Center last month saw musicians and music-industry professionals hashing out some of the most pressing issues facing the music business today. Not surprisingly, the monetization and piracy of digital music was a subject that came up in all panels, though (also not surprisingly) the issue was never fully resolved. Meeting one week before Google’s announcement of a partnership with MySpace, Lala, Rhapsody, and imeem to launch its OneBox music search engine, the panelists proposed a variety of remedies for the five-billion-dollar loss that the music industry has suffered annually, ostensibly due to pirating, since 2000.
